Even though Paxton is very unromantic in the sense that he doesn't know how to have a proper date (probably because he's used to putting the bare minimum and people still want him), he still tries. I think there really was no clear choice as Devi holds affection for both Ben and Paxton. I like how it wasn't immediately this or that though. I really thought that Devi and Ben would be only official pairing this season after Paxton's douchiness in the first season and Ben's efforts for her. Gotta say, I LOVE the start of this season.
Then, his family is still important to him, which is why the scene where he shows his sister his test score was so meaningful to wrap up his episode. So while he has his looks going for him, and he also is a naturally-talented swimmer, deep down he still yearns for people to be proud of him - and for there to be a reason he can believe in himself.ĭevi sees this side of him and his potential, and supports him in this, which makes her very special to him and his development and growth to a higher level of attainment and fulfillment. Still, Paxton feels his parents are subtly saying that they don't believe in his ability to do well in school, which fits the theme of what Gigi mentioned: people overall seem to just think he's a good looking person. This is both a statement of the parents' beliefs, and it also shares what beliefs he grew up with, which explains so much about how Paxton (despite his "coolness") was always the person that was concerned and took care of Devi: after the coyote attack, after she fell in the pool, etc.
I think it was Paxton's mom that said something like "we value being caring over accomplishment". Of course, like any family, that love isn't perfect, so we saw how he felt his parents didn't understand him still. Paxton actually has role models and a home environment of love and care. The peek at Ben's life was defined by: abandoned -> lonely -> Devi = first real love of any sort. To me, his episode was more subtly complex than Ben's.
